Learning to Learn | Unlocking Your Superpowers — A Review of the ATL Workshop for Grades 7 and 8
Release time: 2026-09-21
Recently, our Future Education Center held a workshop titled "Learning to Learn — Unlocking Your Superpowers" for Grades 7 and 8 students. Through fun challenges and real-life scenarios, the workshop introduced students to IB MYP Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills, helping them understand through experience that good learning does not rely on brute force, but on methods.

The workshop began with a "Memory Challenge" that quickly energized the classroom. Students memorized random words in 30 seconds, then tackled categorized words. By comparison, they discovered that unstructured memory is like scattered puzzle pieces—time-consuming and easy to forget—while categorization and induction are like stringing beads into a necklace, multiplying efficiency. Students thus understood: the essence of learning is not repetition, but building logic and methods.

Next, the "Think-Pair-Share Group Challenge" let students experience communication and collaboration through timed team formation. When conflicts arose over grouping, everyone reflected together: a lack of clear expression and patient listening, a lack of inclusion and mutual help, and a lack of emotional management and calm analysis can all lead to deadlock in cooperation. This naturally led to the five ATL skill categories.

Thinking skills help us organize logic, categorize and summarize, and think calmly and critically;

Research skills help us explore actively, find information, and adjust strategies;

Communication skills help us learn to listen, express clearly, and negotiate politely;

Social skills help us learn to cooperate, be inclusive, and respect others;

Self-management skills help us manage emotions, plan time, focus on learning, and keep reflecting.

At the end of the workshop, students wrote action lists: think and research actively to make knowledge more organized; learn to communicate and collaborate to play an active role in teams; strengthen self-management to stay calm first and then find solutions when facing challenges.

Good learning relies on logic; good growth relies on abilities. May Grades 7 and 8 students, through continuous practice, master ATL skills and become more autonomous, more confident, and better learners.
